The office of U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards (D-Waco) has announced that the Waco Fire Department will be getting $32,740 from the Department of Homeland Security under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The Alvarado Police Department will receive $176,675 in funding from stimulus legislation signed by President Barack Obama on Feb. 17.
The grants will be administered by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, through the agency’s COPS Hiring Recovery Program.

Officials at a College Station-based training facility that prepares first responders for terrorist attacks are awaiting word on federal funding that would ensure its nationally recognized programs continue.
If a spending bill pending in the U.S. Senate is approved and signed into law, the National Emergency Response and Rescue Training Center at Texas A&M will receive a $23 million grant for anti-terrorism training.

Johnson County may soon receive partial funding for construction of an emergency operations center.
U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, secured $750,000 toward the project in the 2010 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill, which passed the House by a 389-37 vote on Wednesday.

The U.S. House Appropriations Committee agreed to fund $350,000 to the Johnson County Stop the Offender Special Crimes Unit and other county law-enforcement agencies on Tuesday, said U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco.
