The East Cleburne Community recently opened a new after-school program called Project CAN.
“We did a program called SCORE, and it was about 10-12 kids and mainly included TAKS test preparation,” said Executive Director Dexter Baldwin. “But this program will top out at 50 students.”

If you think you might be up for taking on a local student as a weekly lunch buddy or afternoon Scrabble partner, then Communities In Schools is looking for you.
Communities In Schools, a nonprofit agency that puts community resources to work to help children succeed in schools, is looking to significantly expand its school-based mentoring program after receiving federal stimulus funds.
Communities In Schools Heart of Texas has been granted $500,000 to use to recruit hundreds of people during the next few years to be mentors to 10- to 17-year-old students in Waco and La Vega schools and at the Waco Center for Youth’s Residential Treatment Center.

The city of College Station will soon receive nearly $300,000 that U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, said would be used to increase job growth and community development.
The $299,821 from federal stimulus legislation comes in the form of a Community Development Block Grant.

The Communities in Schools of the Heart of Texas program in Waco has been awarded a $500,000 competitive grant from the Department of Justice to provide adult mentoring to at-risk juveniles.

United States Representative Chet Edwards announced that Communities in Schools of the Heart of Texas in Waco has been awarded a $500,000 competitive grant from the Department of Justice (DOJ) authorized under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). This stimulus grant will allow Communities in Schools of the Heart of Texas to provide one-on-one adult mentoring to at risk juveniles ages 10 to 17.

AUSTIN (July 24, 2009)--U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan approved almost $2 billion in federal stimulus money Friday that Texas requested for its public schools.
The money will go to school districts to be used at least in part for a state-mandated $800 bonus for teachers and other professional employees.
